ROBERT ‘LARRY’ LAWRENCE MORTENSEN July 25, 1956 – July 23, 2025

Robert “Larry” Lawrence Mortensen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at UNMH on July 23, 2025, 2 days shy of his 69th birthday, after a courageous albeit brief battle with severe illness.

Larry was born July 25, 1956, in Albuquerque, NM, to Gene and Gail Mortensen. Larry was raised primarily in Los Alamos and was the oldest of six children. He was instrumental in providing loving support and guidance to his siblings with his kind, strong, and steady presence. He graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1974 and then attended school in Albuquerque, where he obtained a degree in accounting.

Larry returned to Los Alamos to start his career in the financial industry. Thanks to his hard work and perseverance, he worked his way up through various positions to become the CEO of Zia Credit Union. He was always well-respected and well-liked by employees and colleagues alike. They loved his humor and supportive management style, as well as his innate capacity for problem-solving.

While Larry enjoyed his work life, he found the most joy in spending time with his family. Larry was the proud parent of Kristin and Brian Mortensen. He encouraged them to always do their best and wanted them to find happiness in life, above all else.

Larry shared his love for sports with Kristin and Brian from an early age. He coached various teams in their youth and throughout the years. Larry took great joy in being an originating member of a long-standing fantasy football league with Brian and his friends. In his final years, he and Kristin spent countless hours bonding over watching their favorite teams while enjoying a meal lovingly cooked by Kristin. Larry and Brian both looked forward to their daily phone calls, where they shared many laughs and talked about football, basketball, and life events.

Larry was extremely funny, smart, and had a magnetic personality that was one of a kind. He had a knack for always being able to rise above and find the lighter side of things. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Kristin Mortensen, his son, Brian (Nyree) Mortensen, his grandsons, Logan and Dawson Mortensen, his siblings, Debbie (Mike) Katko, Russ Mortensen, Dean (Ruth) Mortensen, Tammy Quillman, Kent Mortensen, friend Laurel Roberts, Harbert family, Steve, Shawn, Jana, and Gina and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Gail Mortensen.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on September 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2390 North Road, Los Alamos, NM, immediately followed by interment in the columbarium at the Guaje Pines Cemetery. Afterward, a reception will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
