RICHARD J. SCAMMON June 28, 1940 – Sept. 18, 2022
Richard J. Scammon was born to Raymond and J. Lucile (Larson) Scammon June 28, 1940. He peacefully passed away Sept. 18, 2022, at his home in Los Alamos, NM.
In 1945, brother Jay was born into the family. Although Rickey was born in Glendive, MT, he grew up and attended schools in Wibaux, MT, graduating with the class of ’58 as salutatorian. He continued his education at Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) and after graduating there entered the US Air Force.
During this time in the military, he also attended University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. Following his military service of nearly two decades, he did research in nuclear physics based at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico as an employee of western and southwestern universities, which took him to many research sites here and abroad until his retirement.
Rickey was well-versed in a myriad of subjects reflecting his many interests. You might find him at a museum (as he was drawn to history), camping, hiking trails and enjoying the open air (with his camera), or traveling off the beaten path to see new country. His research involved problem solving at a high level not obvious to others around him. He had an answer for any topic or would carefully study a problem or procedure to discover facts and principles.
His parents and brother preceded him in death. He leaves faithful cousins, coworkers, neighbors, friends and classmates.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Oct. 4, 2022, in the Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive, MT, where Rickey will be laid to rest with his family. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
The family of Richard Scammon has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. Remembrances and condolences can be shared at the location of his services with the family at: www.silhafuneralhomes.com.
