PEGGY JEANETTE HUME Dec. 20, 1948 – June 26, 2022

Longtime Los Alamos resident, Peggy (“Peg”) Jeanette Hume, age 73, passed away on June 26, 2022, in Albuquerque, NM, after a valiant fight with cancer.

She was born December 20, 1948, in Renton, WA.

Peg is survived by four siblings: Vikki (Conrad Smith) Kestell of Albuquerque, NM; Ken (Susan) Kestell of Albuquerque, NM; Pat (Susan) Kestell of Los Alamos, NM; and Laura Lea (Carlo “Moose”) Heath of Bernalillo, NM. She is also survived by thirteen nieces and nephews and a large and growing number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Louise (Isaacs) Rowe.

Peg graduated from UNM’s dental hygiene program and worked as a hygienist for several years. Later, seeking more physically active and interesting opportunities, she worked at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area tuning and adjusting skis and as a Novus Glass windshield repair technician. She drove a school bus for the LA School District, and (her favorite job) drove a bus for fire-fighting crews. Peg was also an avid kayaker and kayaking instructor; she enjoyed the outdoors and living in New Mexico.

More than anything, Peg loved to help people. She volunteered on repeated medical-dental missions to Guatemala. Using her dental hygiene skills, she made cosmetic dental appliances for Mayan villagers who had missing or deformed front teeth so that they could smile with pride. She felt a deep fulfillment with each case and spent a great deal of time and effort collecting donations and supplies for the Mayen population of Guatemala.

Later, she volunteered closer to home with LA Cares, the Los Alamos Food Bank, the Los Alamos Senior Center, the Los Alamos Medical Center’s Hospital Auxiliary Shop, and the Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries. Peg was kind and helpful and appreciated by many.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to LA Cares. Please call (505) 661-8015 to arrange your donation. Thank you.
