Obituary: Kathryn Ann (Spell) Kistner Nov. 3, 1941 – Nov. 24, 2016

KATHRYN ANN (SPELL) KISTNER Nov. 3, 1941 – Nov. 24, 2016

Kathryn Ann (Spell) Kistner was born November 3, 1941 in Flushing, Queens. She died on Thanksgiving Day November 24, 2016 of a long term illness.

She was the third child of Kathryn and Harry Spell and spent her youth and early adulthood on Long Island, NY. On October 20, 1962 she married George Edward Kistner. They had two children, Valerie and David. The family lived on Long Island except for a ten year period when they lived in the small town of Brimfield, Illinois. Kathy moved to Los Alamos in 2003.

Kathy loved life. Her favorite sport was biking and she enjoyed dressing up as a clown for various parades and events. While cooking was not her forte, it never stopped her from trying. She did manage to master the perfect peanut butter cookie. She adored her four grandchildren and she was a great friend to many people.

Kathy had great faith in God.  She had many church homes throughout the years. Her most recent place of worship was Grace Vineyard here in Los Alamos. There she found a truly wonderful group of friends. Here in Los Alamos she was active in the local woman’s Republican group and a proud member of the Red Hat Society. She traveled all over the country with her friends and finally got to live out her dreams of seeing the Rose Bowl Parade in person, going to Alaska and visiting Branson, MO.

Kathy was a woman of considerable courage who battled both metastatic breast cancer and bipolar disorder through the course of her life. As such, the family is encouraging well-wishers to donate to the American Cancer Society or Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance with their support.

She is survived by her son and daughter, David Kistner and Valerie Merl, her daughter and son in law Effie and Rob and her grandchildren Michael, Evan, Tommy and Joseph.

Cremation has taken place and the family will have a private service at a later date. She will be missed.
