JAMES “JIM” CAFFEY STURROCK, Sr. April 27, 1945 – July 24, 2015

James “Jim” Caffey Sturrock, Sr., age 70, of Espanola, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at his son’s home in Lawrenceville, GA while surrounded by his children.

He was born April 27, 1945, to James Parker and Catherine (Caffey) Sturrock, both of blessed memory, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Jim attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1962. He received Bachelor’s (1967) and Master’s (1968) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Jim served as a Captain in the Unites State Air Force at Hill AFB, Utah, from 1968 to 1972.

After many years working in private industry and academic research in Atlanta, he moved to New Mexico in 1986 to begin 29 years of service at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. His duties there included section leader for the magnet power supplies that steered and focused particle beams through the half-mile long particle accelerator, team leader for the interlock system that protected personnel and equipment, systems engineer for radiation security systems and safety officer for accelerator operations. He was often consulted for troubleshooting assistance on numerous systems around the facility because of the breadth and depth of his technical knowledge.

Jim had a lifelong devotion to science and engineering, and won numerous awards in these fields, beginning in grade school. He had a particular zest for astronomy and spelunking. Also, he took great pride in designing, engineering and overseeing the construction of his homes in Georgia and New Mexico.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife Thelma Leonard. He is lovingly remembered by his children: James, Jr. (Sheryl) and Genevieve (Robert) Lancaster, all of Lawrenceville, GA, and Lochlin (Christina) Sturrock of Roswell, GA; grandchildren: Johnathan, Michael Cameron, Nicholas, Marcus, Georgia, James, Michael David, Hunter, Noah, Parker and Matthew; sister, Hester Sturrock of Decatur, GA; brother, David (Gwen); nephews, Augie and Alex of Marshall, MN; and longtime partner, Barbara Sinkula and her children Darcy and Karl, of White Rock, NM.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Fe; 2:00 PM burial will follow at Gauje Pines Cemetery, end of Range Road in Los Alamos. Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta, GA 770.451.4999.
