GAYLE SHERRILL Feb. 24, 1938 – Aug. 3, 2020
Gayle Humes Sherrill passed away on August 3, 2020 in Fresno, California due to complications related to COVID.
Gayle was born in Waldron, Arkansas on February 24, 1938 to Jewell Opal Plummer Sherrill and Hoyt Leslie Sherrill.
He lived in Waldron as a small child, and from 1943-1945, during World War II, he and his family lived in various places in Idaho, California, and Texas.
In 1945, the Sherrill family moved back to Waldron, and in 1949, they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Gayle attended the University of Idaho, where he met his future wife, Nora Quijano. Gayle and Nora were married on July 24, 1961. Gayle received his degree in Architecture in 1962.
Gayle and Nora moved to Fresno, California, where Gayle took a job as a draftsman for Walter Wagner and Associates architectural firm, during which time he contributed to the design for the Fresno County Courthouse. Gayle and Nora’s children, Oscar and Manolo, were born in 1964 and 1967.
He became a licensed architect in 1970. Throughout part of the 1960s and most of the 1970s, Gayle was a building plan checker for the City of Fresno. In 1980, he started his own architectural business, which was in practice until his retirement in 2006.
In recent years, Gayle enjoyed spending time with his family, most of which still lives in Fresno.
Gayle is survived by his wife Nora, his children Oscar (Jenny) of Fresno, California, and Manolo (Leslie) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and his grandchildren Vincent, Elaine, Charles, Rebecca, Amelia, Elise, and Alexander.
A memorial service will be held at a future date.
