FRANCIS HARVEY HARLOW Jan. 22, 1928 – July 1, 2016
Francis Harvey Harlow died Friday morning, July 1, 2016 in Los Alamos, New Mexico at age 88.
He was born to Francis Harvey Harlow and Florence Louis Melvin Harlow on January 22, 1928 in Seattle, Washington. After his mother died when he was twelve, he and his younger brother, Bruce, moved to Bremerton, Washington to live with an aunt, Bessie Harlow Burks, until he graduated from Bremerton High School in 1945.
After serving in the U.S. Army between 1945-1950 with an Honorable Discharge, he attended University of Washington, graduating in 1953 with a PhD in Physics. Then came the “fifty years and two days” here at LASL-LANL where he was a member of T-3 in Theoretical Division, serving as Group Leader for fourteen of those years. During his long career he was acknowledged with several professional awards for scientific achievements.
A serious study of regional fossils soon claimed his interest, followed gradually by the longer lasting, scholarly study of Pueblo Indian pottery for which he gained world recognition. After two nearby forest fires, his significant and important collection of pottery was given to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe for safe storage and for use by future students and enthusiasts.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Patricia Nystuen Harlow, children Catherine (Joseph), Celia, Keith; daughter, Carol Harlow Muiznieks, predeceased him; grandchildren Lisa, Adam, Clinton, Haely (David); two great grandchildren, Liam and Ivy, and nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no public memorial. Any memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
