EVERETT D. HOLMES JR. Aug. 3, 1937 – April 26, 2019
Everett D. Holmes Jr. (81) passed away on Friday, April 26th, 2019 at the Los Alamos Medical Center.
That simple dash between the date of birth and the date of death listed on everyone’s tombstone had a lot of meaning to Everett and he was very proud of the way he lived his dash. He was a 20-year cancer survivor.
He was born in West Hudson Hospital in Kearny, New Jersey – the first child of Everett Daniel Holmes Sr. and Anna Theresa (Kelzenberg) Holmes on August 3rd, 1937.
He was a 1955 graduate of Kearny High School, upon graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force. Everett married his High School sweetheart (Merlyn “Lynn” Elizabeth Morris) on June 15th, 1957.
While working full time and raising a family he attended Fairleigh Dickenson University and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1966. Upon graduation he accepted a position with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He moved his family to Los Alamos, NM in July 1966 and has been a resident ever since.
Everett was very involved in the local community, serving with Pajarito Masonic Lodge, Los Alamos Eastern Star Chapter, Los Alamos Shrine Club, Scottish Rite and York Rite bodies.
He was also an avid supporter of Los Alamos Youth activities, including Los Alamos & White Rock Little Leagues, Los Alamos Aquatomics, Young America Football League (YAFL), Boy Scouts (he himself an Eagle Scout), Los Alamos Rainbow Girls and Santa Fe DeMolay (he himself a Senior DeMolay).
Everett served as Worshipful Master of Pajarito Lodge #66 in 1977, he was Worthy Patron of Los Alamos Chapter #63 Order of the Easter Star four times (and as he was proud to say “twice on two legs and twice on one”).
He served as President of the Los Alamos Shrine Club. He served numerous terms as Rainbow Dad for Los Alamos Assembly #36 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Everett served as Grand Warder for the Grand Jurisdiction of New Mexico Order of the Eastern Star in 2015/16.
He was proud to have worked in many varying positions with LANL during his 27 years of service, from Engineering to the Hot Dry Rock Project to his time spent at the Nevada Test Site. After failing retirement, he enjoyed his opportunity to work with former Laboratory Colleagues at Jemez Technologies (Eagle-i).
He served Los Alamos County as County Assessor for several terms, and earned his Master of Arts in Public Administration from UNM in 1981 to become more effective in his elected office.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of 41 years (Lynn Holmes – 1998), his parents (Everett & Anna Holmes). He is survived by his Sister Jeannette Vreeland, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey; his children Lisa (Jon) Wheeler and their children Danny & Sheryl of Beavercreek, Ohio; Larry Holmes, Los Alamos; David (Mary Lou) Holmes, Los Alamos and their children Lori Ellard and Stuart Stein and seven great grandchildren.
A Masonic and Eastern Star Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 22nd at the Pajarito Masonic Lodge (1400 N Sage Loop, Los Alamos, NM).
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses, along with the staff at Los Alamos Medical Center for the care that was given to our father during his final days. We would also like to thank the Professional Care Management Staff for their nursing care while he was at home until he could no longer be there.
