Nurses With Heart: Free Online Home Care Classes

NHHC News:

Nurses with Heart is in the heart of the community and in the heart of the internet, as health and safety opportunities move online, while offering in person care as well.

Nurses With Heart Home Care provides both personal and medical care in one’s own home. They have professional and trained caregivers who assist with bathing, grooming, light meals, light housework, companionship and transportation. Their team follows COVID-19 safety precautions, and are licensed by the New Mexico Department of Health.

This allows their medical staff to fulfill doctor’s orders, provide wound care, medication management and other nursing services, and can assist families with case management.

Carolyn Moore has served Los Alamos, White Rock and Santa Fe for 10 years. As the pandemic has progressed, the team has been called on to provide more personal and medical care in clients’ homes.

“We strive to keep clients comfortable and safe in their homes and lessen situations that would require them to go into assisted living facilities or go, or return to, the hospital,” Moore said. “That said, we have also assisted clients transition to assisted living facilities or nursing homes.”

Moore and her staff have pivoted to offering a variety of online components, to keep people engaged and aware of not just services, but as new life situations find some in new territory. Their new Family Caregiver’s Stress Buster’s Program uses technology to offer a community of support to help caregivers with their own isolation and anxiety.

The program is free and provides support, education, stress management techniques and allows caregivers to develop coping strategies. Those interested in attending must be a family caregiver (wife, husband, child, partner, relative, friend) to a loved one with cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s, chronic illness or other disease or disability.

The NWH Home Care team wasn’t sure all of this technology would be a success and surprised with the reception.

“The convenience of participating in the program from your living room or kitchen and still receive the support of the group was so popular that we will continue to offer the Stress Buster’s program virtually in the future,” Moore said. “Participants did not have to find care for their loved ones or drive to another location.”

The smaller online groups allow for more time to talk and share and they have been delighted with the positive response of the participants.

Anyone not yet ready for a class but in need of some support might try the Parkinson’s, and Movement Disorder group, which meets weekly online, too. This alliance has allowed for connections with other community members experiencing; Ataxia, Dystonia, Huntington’s disease, Tourette syndrome, tremors and more.

The PMD virtual meetings are 2 p.m., every Wednesday. The meeting is held, via a secured, password protected Zoom site. Those new members wishing to take part can call Allie Thompson at 505.672.9498, to be added to the membership list.
