- Annual Report Provides Insight into Vital National Security Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has released its Fiscal Year 2016 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan (SSMP).
The FY16 SSMP documents NNSA’s 25-year strategic plan for accomplishing its core stockpile stewardship mission area of maintaining the safety, security and effectiveness of the nuclear stockpile without nuclear testing. It also describes NNSA’s phased approach to maintaining and recapitalizing the scientific and production infrastructure that underpins the nation’s nuclear security enterprise.
“The SSMP serves as a valuable resource for anyone who wants to better understand the NNSA and how it accomplishes its vital national security missions through the unique scientific, engineering and technical expertise resident in our national laboratories and production plants,” NNSA Administrator (Ret.) Gen. Frank G. Klotz said. “These world-class capabilities also support a host of other national security and nonproliferation activities.”
The SSMP is updated annually and provides NNSA’s formal response to several congressionally-mandated reporting requirements. It is fully aligned with the policies and plans approved by the Nuclear Weapons Council, the principal forum for collaboration between the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy on nuclear matters.
As the SSMP describes in detail, NNSA’s life extension programs remain on schedule and on budget. However, a significant change is being made in the program to update the W88 warhead deployed on the Navy’s sea-launched ballistic missile. Additionally, the scheduled delivery date of the first production unit of the warhead for the Air Force’s Long Range Stand-off (LRSO) system is being accelerated by two years, from FY 2027 to FY 2025.
