WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has established the Advisory Committee for Nuclear Security (ACNS).

Formerly known as the Defense Programs Advisory Committee, the newly formed ACNS enlists experts with knowledge that spans the full range of the NNSA missions to provide independent advice and recommendations to NNSA leadership. The ACNS will provide insight on the stewardship and modernization of the nation’s nuclear stockpile and enterprise, nuclear nonproliferation and arms control, and counterterrorism and counterproliferation.

NNSA envisions the ACNS serving a role by critically examining programs and strategies in an evolving international security environment. The Committee will advise NNSA leadership on topics such as technical approach, workforce and pipeline activities, and the ability to deliver the mission more efficiently, effectively, and rapidly to keep up with pacing threats.

As the only place in government where the complementary missions of nuclear deterrence, arms control, and nonproliferation meet to advance our national security, NNSA will benefit from independent evaluation and advice to enhance innovation, collaboration, and action central to the ACNS charter.

The ACNS is established consistent with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, and this notice was posted to the Federal Register Feb. 8, 2023.
