NMSP: Fatal Shooting Near Las Vegas, N.M.

ROMEROVILLE — May 15, 2023, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) were dispatched to the area of Interstate 25 and Frontage Road 2137 in Romeroville near Las Vegas, N.M. in reference to a single vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, officers learned a female was seen fleeing the scene of the crash armed with a firearm. The female was later identified as Rosa Ybarra, 31, of Las Vegas, N.M.

When Ybarra was detained by arriving officers, she possessed a handgun.

Officers also observed a male slumped over in the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. He was identified as Tomas Lopez, 36, of Las Vegas, N.M. Lopez was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The NMSP Investigations Bureau was called to investigate the homicide.

Ybarra was interviewed by NMSP Investigations Bureau agents where it was learned Lopez was the driver of the crashed vehicle. Ybarra, a passenger in the vehicle, had armed herself with a handgun and shot Mr. Lopez. The vehicle subsequently crashed. She was booked into the San Miguel Detention Center on the charge of First-Degree Murder.

This case is under investigation by the NMSP Investigations Bureau.
