NMDOT News:
MILAN — As holiday travel ramps up, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) urges motorists to take steps to ensure safe and uninterrupted trips.
Buckling up, exercising patience and using extra caution during heavy traffic or winter weather can help reduce crashes and delays.
Before departing, drivers should inspect their vehicles, including tires, fluids, lights, brakes and batteries, to help prevent breakdowns. Motorists are also encouraged to carry emergency supplies such as a first-aid kit, medications, blankets, snacks and water in case of unexpected delays.
Drivers are reminded to avoid distractions, including using mobile phones or eating while driving. Obey all traffic laws and practice safe driving habits, such as maintaining a safe following distance, scanning the roadway ahead and staying calm and attentive.
Motorists should also watch for wildlife, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals such as deer are most active. Reduce speed and use high beams when appropriate to increase reaction time, especially in high-risk areas and on curves.
Planning ahead is key to a safe trip. Know your route, monitor weather forecasts, and visit www.nmroads.com or call 511 for the most current roadway and travel conditions.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation wishes everyone a happy holiday season and safe travels throughout the Land of Enchantment.
