NMDOT Proposing Safety Improvement Project For N.M. 599 Southbound On-Ramp To U.S. 285/84

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is proposing safety improvements at the interchange between N.M. 599 and U.S. 84/285.

The proposed project includes realignment of the N.M. 599 southbound on-ramp to U.S. 84/285, addition of a 1,200-foot acceleration lane, installation of median wall barrier to replace the aging/sub-standard median wall barrier between N.M 599 and the Guadalupe Street exit, and the closure of Viento Drive access to/from U.S. 84/285.

Access to Viento Drive would still be available from Calle Mejia.

The purpose of the project is to enhance safety by:

  • Increasing visibility and merge distance;
  • Reducing conflict points and potential crashes; and
  • Upgrading concrete median and metal barriers to meet current NMDOT standards

The NMDOT is hosting a Virtual Open House to provide a project update and present the results of the traffic study for closure of Viento Drive.
