SANTA FE — New Mexico Actors Lab opens the 2025 Fall season on Sept. 12 with Cowboy Mouth, an urban fable by Sam Shepard and Patti Smith. The production will run at NMAL through Sunday, Sept. 28.
First performed in Edinburgh then the American Place Theater in New York in 1971, Cowboy Mouth is about a woman who kidnaps a young man at gunpoint, taking him hostage from his wife and child to make him a pop prophet, ”like a rock-and-roll Jesus with a cowboy mouth.”
Zoe Lesser will direct this exhilarating and poetic play with its contemporary relevance. Her thoughts: “Cowboy Mouth interrogates the role and responsibility of the artist in society, and asks who exactly will be capable of saving us. In a fast-paced fever dream, Slim and Cavale tend to each other’s artists’ wounds and seek to build – or perhaps, find – the artistic prophet that will speak to this generation. Creativity lives within all of us. How can we best use it to make people feel less alone?”
Tickets are now on sale at the NMAL website, www.nmactorslab.com. Flex Passes are $96 (three shows or admissions, 20% off). Individual tickets are $40, with discounted tickets (see website for details) and a preview performance costing $20. If seats are available, $5 rush tickets will go on sale five minutes before each performance. All performances are at NMAL’s permanent home, the Lab Theater, 1213 B Parkway Drive in Santa Fe – one block from Meow Wolf.
Thursday – Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday performances begin at 2 p.m.
