NMAA News:

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) recognized the Gallup girls’ basketball team and Head Coach Kamau Turner as the Compete with Class award recipients for January.

Aztec Athletic Director Bryan Sander shared these comments following a girls’ basketball game against Gallup and Aztec in late January: “Coach Turner seemed very classy with the way he behaved with his athletes and the officials. When his girls would get called for a foul he would coach his athletes about how they could do things better instead of yelling or complaining to the official. Gallup is an extremely talented team and they conduct themselves well and I think this is a direct reflection of Coach Turner.”

The NMAA defines sportsmanship as the act of treating others in a respectful manner, taking personal accountability for one’s actions and responding with integrity while engaged in competition.

The NMAA would like to thank and recognize Turner and his team for setting a great example for New Mexico.

Their act of sportsmanship exemplifies the true ideals of the Compete with Class Sportsmanship Initiative – respect, integrity and responsibility. More information regarding the initiative can be found on the NMAA website at www.nmact.org. The recognition is presented monthly throughout the school year.
