ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) is proud to announce that Eldorado High School student Jackson Simpkins has been named a National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Heart of the Arts Award winner for Section 6.

Simpkins is being honored for demonstrating extraordinary resilience and passion for music in the face of a life-changing diagnosis.

After being diagnosed with Functional Neurologic Disorder, Simpkins lost mobility and began using a wheelchair. Rather than stepping away from school activities, he remained fully engaged.

Simpkins was committed to marching band, wind symphony, his favorite part of school. For two marching seasons, he performed from a wheelchair, demonstrating adaptability, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to his ensemble. Simpkins consistently demonstrates high-level musicianship, reliability, and passion. His involvement also extends to drama, where he serves on the technical crew, supporting school productions behind the scenes.

With the help of his community, including a custom-designed harness that allowed him to play trumpet while maneuvering his wheelchair, Simpkins inspires peers and reinforces the power of inclusion and determination. His story raises awareness for others facing similar challenges. Now regaining mobility, Simpkins looks ahead to marching alongside his peers once again, continuing to embody perseverance, leadership, and the true spirit of the arts.

“Jackson Simpkins has shown incredible courage, resilience, and passion for the arts,” NMAA Executive Director Dusty Young said. “His determination to continue performing at a high level, while overcoming significant challenges, is truly inspiring. He represents the very best of New Mexico, and we are proud to celebrate him as an NFHS Heart of the Arts Award winner.”
