GOLF News:
ESPANOLA – The 2023 New Mexico-West Texas (NM-WT) Amateur Championship is set to take place June 26-28 at Black Mesa Golf Club. This will be a 54-hole stroke play event that will feature some of the best amateur golfers from New Mexico and West Texas.
Defending champion and current New Mexico State Aggie Aidan Thomas will return to the 2023 field two days after competing in the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island. Thomas will tee off round one at 8:10 a.m. off the first tee, playing alongside teammate and 2021 SCAGA Men’s Player of the Year River Smalley.
Another Aggie competing in the field is 2023 SCAGA Spring Stroke Play champion Javier Delgadillo. Delgadillo was named the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. His father (Javier Sr.) was the 2001 NM-WT Amateur Champion at Painted Dunes. Delgadillo’s round one tee time is 9:50 a.m. off the number one tee.
Other local collegiate golfers in the field include Quinn Yost and Anthony Lara. Yost is a 2022 graduate of Piedra Vista High School and just completed his freshman year playing college golf at the University of Nebraska-Lincon. Lara just finished his freshman year at Western New Mexico University, and qualified for U.S. Open Sectionals last spring. Both players will tee off at 8 a.m. off the number 10 tee.
This year will mark the 47th edition of the NM-WT Amateur Championship. Tee times all three rounds is 8-10 a.m. off the first and 10th tees.
