NM School For The Arts Presents ‘Winter Dances’

The New Mexico School for the Arts will present its annual performance series, Winter Dances, an evening of mixed dance repertoire, at two venues.

The company will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, Saturday, Jan. 24 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 at the James A. Little Theater 1060 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe.

The company also will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan 31 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Hiland Theater of National Dance Institute of New Mexico, 4800 Central Ave. SE in Albuquerque.

The fifth annual Winter Dances will delight audiences, as New Mexico’s finest young dancers perform: 

  • The Rally from Quarry by the legendary Meredith Monk;
  • The Huddle by post-modern dance pioneer Simone Forti;
  • CLASH, choreographed by NMSA Department Chair Adam McKinney;
  • A Trick of the Light, a contemporary work by Las Cruces native Joshua Peugh (staged by Los Angeles-based contemporary dance company BODYTRAFFIC); and
  • Not Another Nutcracker, a mixture of classical ballet and contemporary choreography set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington.

New Mexico School for the Arts provides access to a rigorous mastery arts and academic high school education for youth with passion and aptitude for the arts, leading to post-secondary learning, careers in the arts, and lives that contribute to society. NMSA is a public/private partnership comprised of the NMSA-Art Institute, a nonprofit art educational institution, and NMSA-Charter School, a New Mexico state charter high school.
