NHCC News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Make Leap Day 2020 memorable. Celebrate the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) 20th anniversary year, at the first of many events planned during this yearlong commemoration of the founding of NHCC.

This anniversary year provides the opportunity for 20/20 vision, to look back at what has been accomplished at NHCC and set sights on the future.

Over the past two decades the NHCC has shared thousands of stories showcasing art, history, literature, and performance that celebrate Hispanic culture in New Mexico, the United States, and around the world.

Saturday, Feb. 29, 2-5 p.m., NHCC is hosting the first center-wide anniversary open house event, which is free and open to the public. Featuring a variety of activities and entertainment, the Leap Day open house will allow guests to explore the multidisciplinary offerings throughout the NHCC campus.

Activities include a blessing of the campus, hands-on creative projects, a passport tour to enter prize drawings, tours of the Art Museum and backstage in the Performing Arts Building, and music and dance. The event also will include a poetry reading by New Mexico State Poet Laureate Levi Romero.

The Leap Day celebration includes free anniversary cookies, other refreshments for purchase, and an opportunity to shop in the Tiendita.

“Our goal is to let guests move throughout the campus to explore the many programs, events, and opportunities to learn here and how the campus has evolved over two decades,” said Jadira Gurulé, Art Museum Curator and Anniversary Committee member.

“It’s been a rewarding experience to look back on NHCC’s accomplishments during its first 20 years as a group,” said Annette Luján, NHCC volunteer coordinator and Anniversary Committee member. “We are really excited to celebrate what’s ahead.”

Events throughout the 20th anniversary year at NHCC are intended to showcase the wide range of programming that makes the Center unique. Those events will highlight favorite moments and accomplishments at the Center over the past two decades with a focus on lessons for the future.
