New Mexico’s Unemployment Rate Was 4.2% In July 2025

New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in July, unchanged from the rate in June and down from 4.3 percent in the previous year. The national unemployment rate in July was 4.2 percent, up from 4.1 percent in June and unchanged from the rate in July 2024.

Total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 26,400 jobs, or 3.0 percent, between July 2024 and July 2025. The majority of gains came from the private sector. The private sector was up 22,700 jobs, or 3.3 percent, while the public sector was up 3,700 jobs, or 2.1 percent. Within the private sector, the private service-providing industries were up 14,200 jobs, or 2.4 percent, while employment in the goods-producing industries was up 8,500 jobs, or 7.9 percent, from the level in July 2024.

Six of the nine private industries reported gains compared to employment levels in July 2024. Within the goods-producing industries, mining and construction employment increased by 8,000 jobs, or 10.2 percent. Most job gains were in construction, which was up 7,500 jobs, or 13.8 percent, over the year.

Mining was up 500 jobs, or 2.1 percent. Manufacturing was up 500 jobs, or 1.7 percent. Within manufacturing, all job gains were in non-durable goods manufacturing, which was up 3.9 percent. Within the private service-providing industries, private education and health services posted a gain of 10,000 jobs, or 6.9 percent.

Within the industry, most gains were in health care and social assistance, which was up 7,000 jobs, or 5.5 percent. Private educational services was up 3,000 jobs, or 16.7 percent. Professional and business services was up 3,500 jobs, or 2.9 percent. Financial activities was up 1,800 jobs, or 5.1 percent. Trade, transportation, and utilities employment was up 1,000 jobs, or 0.7 percent. Within this industry, transportation, warehousing, and utilities was up 800 jobs, or 2.7 percent; wholesale trade was up 100 jobs, or 0.5 percent; and retail trade was up 100 jobs, or 0.1 percent.

Miscellaneous other services were down 1,200 jobs, or 4.1 percent. Information was down 800 jobs, or 7.8 percent. Leisure and hospitality employment was down 100 jobs, or 0.1 percent.

Within the public sector, local government was up 2,700 jobs, or 2.8 percent. Within local government employment, local government education added 1,800 jobs, representing an increase of 4.1 percent. Local government excluding education was up 900 jobs, or 1.7 percent. Employment in state government was up 2,600 jobs, or 5.0 percent. Within state government, most gains were in state government excluding education, which was up 2,100 jobs, or 6.4 percent. State government education was up 500 jobs, or 2.6 percent.

Federal government was down 1,600 jobs, or 5.4 percent, from its employment level in July 2024. Further analysis will be provided in the Labor Market Review scheduled for release on August 26.
