NMSTO News:
SANTA FE — The New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office is recognizing #ABLEtoSave Month this April by promoting the state’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) program, the New Mexico State Treasurer’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (NM STABLE), and encouraging eligible New Mexicans with disabilities and their families to take advantage of its long-term financial benefits.
NM STABLE accounts allow individuals with qualifying disabilities to save and invest for disability-related expenses, including housing, education, transportation, and healthcare, without jeopardizing eligibility for critical public benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. Eligible account holders can contribute annually to build financial independence while maintaining access to essential support services.
As of early this year, significantly more New Mexicans are now eligible to open an ABLE account due to a change in federal law that increased the age of disability onset from 26 to 46. This expansion allows individuals who developed disabilities later in life, including many veterans and those impacted by illness or injury, to access the financial security and flexibility that NM STABLE provides.
To inform the public about how ABLE accounts can help eligible people with disabilities save for the future while protecting access to important public benefits like Medicaid and social security income (SSI), ABLE Today will be a free informational webinar at 1 p.m., May 14, 2026. The webinar will provide an overview of NM STABLE accounts and how they support financial security for members of the disability community. Attendees will hear from experts about eligibility requirements, how to open and manage an account, how family and friends can contribute, and how these accounts support greater financial security and flexibility. The webinar will feature benefits experts from the Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) and ABLE experts from the ABLE Savings Plans Network (ASPN).
“NM STABLE is a powerful tool that helps New Mexicans with disabilities plan for their financial future with confidence and ease,” said New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya. “This program allows New Mexicans with disabilities to save for essential expenses while protecting the benefits they depend on. I encourage all New Mexicans to join ABLE’s upcoming webinar to learn how NM STABLE can make a meaningful difference in building financial security while living with a disability.”
