In 2024 New Mexico State Police (NMSP) saw a noticeable reduction in crashes compared to 2023.
Throughout the year 2024, NMSP conducted several proactive operations throughout the state aimed at increasing patrol presence to enhance motorist safety and decrease the number of crashes.
NMSP’s proactive measures include increased traffic stops, DWI checkpoints, holiday travel traffic operations, and community outreach measures that included hearing the community’s concerns about which areas needed a more targeted approach.
NMSP’s proactive measures to curb dangerous driving behaviors before they lead to crashes have proven successful in 2024.
In 2024 NMSP handled 4,543 crashes, a noticeable decrease from 2023 where NMSP handled 4,840 crashes. In addition to the decrease in crashes, NMSP also saw a significant decrease in fatal crashes. In 2024 NMSP investigated 138 fatal crashes, and in 2023 NMSP investigated 161 fatal crashes.
Sustaining the progress into 2025 is a goal that NMSP will remain committed to as New Mexico State Police prioritizes motorist safety. Officers will continue to conduct traffic operations throughout the state, employing new strategies to stay ahead of threats to motorist safety such as DWIs, distracted driving and careless driving.
As always, NMSP encourages the public to drive safely and follow all traffic laws while traveling on New Mexico’s roadways so we can continue to enhance the safety of all motorists.
