New Mexico State Police Involved In OIS In Los Lunas

NMSP News:

LOS LUNAS – On April 24, 2026, New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau agents were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting (OSI) involving NMSP in Los Lunas.

Agents learned that at around 8:30 p.m., the officer engaged their emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Manzano Road on a grey 2004 Dodge pickup truck. The vehicle failed to yield and continued driving before stopping at 4 Sierra Vista Drive in Meadow Lake.

During the stop, the male driver, identified as Jesus Munoz Duran, 53, exited the vehicle and stood by the driver’s side door. The officer gave commands for Munoz to show his hands, and at some point during the encounter, Munoz presented a pistol and fired it at the officer. The officer then returned fire from his duty firearm, striking Munoz. The officer rendered aid to Munoz until paramedics arrived. Munoz was later pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Munoz was currently on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was a convicted felon.

No officers were injured during this incident. This incident remains under investigation by the NMSP Investigations Bureau.

The identity of the officer will not be released until interviews are completed. The officer has been placed on standard administrative leave.

NMSP acts solely as factfinders in its investigation and conducts an unbiased and impartial investigation. In OIS incidents, NMSP thoroughly documents the scene, collects evidence, and interviews officers, subjects, and witnesses.

In turn, NMSP compiles facts as detailed as possible and forwards all reports to the appropriate district attorney for review. NMSP does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified; this determination rests solely with the district attorney’s office.
