ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame is set to induct its distinguished class of 2025, celebrating five legendary figures who have left an indelible mark on the Land of Enchantment’s sports legacy on June 27 at the Clyde Hotel. These inductees represent the pinnacle of athletic achievement, coaching excellence, and state pride.

The 2025 induction class includes:

• Courtney Frerichs: An elite long-distance runner who powered the University of New Mexico to a 2015 NCAA team title. A 2016 NCAA Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, she later captured a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and made history as the first American woman to run the steeplechase in under nine minutes.
• Anita Maxwell: A trailblazing force for New Mexico State University basketball. Maxwell became the first NCAA player—male or female—to achieve a career milestone of 2,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 300 steals. An All-American, she holds the distinction of being the first player in NMSU history to have her number retired.
• Miles Watters: A coaching titan with a 36-year career marked by a state-record 526 wins. Watters led Clayton High School to 11 state titles—including a record-setting eight consecutive championships—and added another state title at Clovis High School.
• John Fields: A former UNM standout golfer who translated his collegiate success into a storied coaching career. Fields led the Lobos to nine NCAA championship appearances and later guided the University of Texas men’s golf program to NCAA team titles in 2012 and 2022. He has been honored as Golfweek’s Men’s National Coach of the Year three times.
• Landry Jones: A hometown hero from Artesia, Jones led his high school to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007. He went on to achieve collegiate records in passing yards, attempts, and touchdowns, finishing with an impressive 39-11 record as a starter at Oklahoma.
