SANTA FE – It is with great sadness that the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (NMRLD) announces Bernice Geiger, Communications Director, passed away suddenly alongside her husband, Mark, in an auto collision in Arizona Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023.
Geiger started at NMRLD in 2007, serving as the marketing director of the Securities Division where she took great pride in outreach on topics of consumer education and safety, particularly as it relates to the prevention of senior fraud and exploitation. She was an active member of the North American Securities Administrators Association and served on its Investor Education Section Committee.
Due to her positive outlook and commitment to her work, Geiger quickly rose to become a leader beyond the Securities Division and throughout the agency as a whole.
In 2017 Geiger was named Public Information Officer after serving as the department’s interim PIO for several years and served as spokesperson for the entire department supporting several superintendents and making lasting relationships with New Mexico media, community partners, and other state agencies.
“Bernice was an incredible person and cared deeply about NMRLD’s mission to protect public safety,” NMRLD Superintendent Linda Trujillo said. “In her more than 15 years at the department, she always made an effort to know everyone’s name and the knowledge she had of the department made her a trusted and respected colleague. I speak for myself and the rest of the NMRLD staff when I say we will miss the wisdom and kindness Bernice brought to work each day.”
Bernice was known for providing guidance, support, mentorship, and career development opportunities for colleagues and employees. She was also very generous and would frequently call her co-workers to see what coffee beverages or foods she could pick up on her way to the office.
Prior to her tenure at NMRLD, Geiger worked at Qwest (US West) for more than 20 years, rising through the company to serve as Regional Public Relations Manager.
Geiger’s laugh and infectious smile could light up any room. She was especially joyful when talking about her family. She was a proud mother and grandmother, with two children, two grandchildren, and a third grandchild on the way. She will be greatly missed.
