ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich’s campaign has announced the endorsement of the New Mexico Professional Fire Fighters Association (NMPFFA).
“From City Council to the halls of Congress, Martin Heinrich has been an unwavering champion for fire fighters, first responders, our families and our communities,” NMPFFA Vice President Miguel Tittmann said. “Martin grew up in a strong union household, so he knows that our state, country, and economy are strongest when we protect workers’ rights. As Senator, he was instrumental in supporting our members and affected families during and after the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon fire, and delivered key legislation that funds local fire departments, protects our basic right to join a union, and invests in the infrastructure and equipment to keep us safe. The NMPFFA stands united in supporting Senator Martin Heinrich for re-election.”
Sen. Heinrich addressed the NMPFFA endorsement saying, “To have the support of the NMPFFA truly means the world to me. As the son of an IBEW lineman, I know how important it is that every person has a voice in their workplace. New Mexico’s fire fighters and first responders put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and I’m honored to fight on their behalf in Washington, D.C. for safer work conditions, better pay, and collective bargaining rights. Together, we will advance the rights of all workers and build a stronger, fairer New Mexico.”
His campaign said that Sen. Heinrich has made workers’ rights a top priority in the US. Senate. Heinrich is a co-sponsor of the PRO Act, legislation that would protect the basic right to join a union. He has co-sponsored the Fire Grant and Safety Act, which reauthorizes the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. The bill funds local fire departments and ensures firefighters and first responders get the pay they deserve. He has also co-sponsored the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 which would repeal provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive other benefits, such as a pension from the state or local government. Over the past three years, Heinrich has secured $11.3 million for 16 projects for fire departments across New Mexico in Congressionally Directed Spending.
