Staff Report

The New Mexico Press Association (NMPA) has elected Los Alamos Daily Post Owner/Publisher Carol A. Clark to serve on its Board Of Directors.

The election was made at the 2022 General Membership meeting held during the NMPA annual convention Friday and Saturday at the Eldorado Hotel in downtown Santa Fe.

“We are very pleased that Carol decided to help us out by serving on the NMPA Board, NMPA Executive Director Sammy Lopez said.

The NMPA exists to improve the quality of member newspapers, encourage high journalistic standards, promote journalism education and seeks to protect the rights of free speech for its members as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America.

“I am happy for the opportunity to serve on the NMPA Board,” Clark said. “The NMPA is an important organization that has proven time and again to be a great resource and advocate for the Post and newspapers across the state.”

Clark will serve with NMPA Board of Directors President Nick Seibel, publisher/editor of the Silver City Daily Press; 1st Vice President Barbara Beck, publisher of the Roswell Record, Secretary-Treasurer Tom Cross, publisher of the Santa Fe New Mexican and Immediate Past President Babette Hermann, publisher of the Gallup Sun.

During last weekend’s conference, Clark also was appointed to serve on the NMPA legal committee with Seibel and Donn Friedman, senior vice president of news at the Albuquerque Journal.

Clark’s 2-year term on the NMPA Board of Directors begins immediately. In addition to the NMPA Board, Clark serves on the Executive Committee of the United Way of Northern New Mexico, Executive Committee of the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation, Los Alamos Housing Partnership Board and the International Women’s Forum – New Mexico.

The NMPA is comprised of three organizations with different functions:

  • New Mexico Press Association – Founded in 1901, the NMPA is the industry representative for member newspapers throughout the state. As the leading advocate, the association is on the front line when it comes to defending and protecting issues important to not only the industry, but for anyone who supports transparency in government. Every fall, NMPA members gather for an annual convention, which includes professional development workshops, guest speakers and an award ceremony.
  • New Mexico Press Service – The press service is the advertising arm of the press association. The organization helps clients place advertisements in the state’s newspapers through the Classified, 2X2 and Display ad networks. In addition, the service also has a Press Release Program to help clients write and place press releases with media outlets throughout the state.
  • New Mexico Press Association Foundation – The Foundation’s mission is journalism education. As such, it holds the annual High School Journalism Workshop most summers. The workshop provides high school juniors and seniors to learn the newspaper industry from professionals in the newspaper business.

At this year’s NMPA awards ceremony, Los Alamos Daily Post Publisher Carol A. Clark and Reporter Bonnie Gordon won first place in the state for their story ‘LAHS Teacher’s Simple Act Of Kindness Inspires Students’ published June 23, 2022 in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
