New Mexico Outdoor Rec Division Trails+ $10 Million Grant Opportunity

STATE News:

The Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD) will soon open the Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant with $10 million in funding for New Mexico communities. ORD is reaching out to share more information about the Division and the Trails+ Grant.

ORD works to ensure that all New Mexicans gain from the public health, environmental, and economic benefits of sustainable outdoor recreation. It is our job at ORD (a division of the Economic Development Department), to grow the outdoor recreation economy in a sustainable way that benefits people statewide. That starts with equitable access to the outdoors, from the Organ Mountains to the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness.

To grow outdoor access for both residents and visitors, as well as preserve these wild places within our state, ORD created the Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant in 2020. The grant program has since funded 90+ projects across New Mexico. Examples of projects include trail design or construction, signage, river access, whitewater amenities, outdoor classroom infrastructure, trailhead improvements, picnic shelters, wildlife viewing areas. ORD will open this year’s Trails+ Grant program for applications July 1, 2023.

This grant invests in conservation-minded shovel-ready projects that are open to the public, increase access to outdoor opportunities, and demonstrate a clear economic benefit to the community through improved quality of life, better public health outcomes, and/or increased eco-tourism.

Eligible applicants include Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations; Municipalities; Counties; Nonprofits; Public preschools/schools/districts; Colleges/Universities; Soil and water conservation districts; Acequia and land grant associations.

Grants are organized into two tiers:

  • Local projects ($25,000 to $99,999); and
  • Regional projects ($100,000 to $500,000).

Read Trails+ Grant Program Guide for more about this program (also on the ORD website). Visit the website (nmoutside.com) for press releases of previously funded projects and a link to the online application. The 2023 Trails+ Grant will be open on a rolling basis until funds are expended, so ORD encourages early applications.
