New Mexico Insurance Superintendent Moves Against Fraud

Superintendent of Insurance Russell Toal

STATE News:

New Mexico Superintendent of Insurance Russell Toal has announced the indictment of Matthew Walker of Albuquerque for felony arson and insurance fraud May 21, 2021.

Special agents with the Criminal Division of the Office of Superintendent of Insurance worked with Albuquerque Fire and Rescue to investigate the matter.

Walker is accused of setting fire to his car when it was parked at a dealership pending repair. Walker is further charged with filing a fraudulent insurance claim with his auto insurance carrier for the fire damage to his vehicle.

Walker failed to appear for his arraignment scheduled June 4, 2021, and the Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

“Insurance fraud is an increasing problem resulting in rate increases for all policy holders, and we intend to aggressively prosecute all instances of such fraud in New Mexico,” Superintendent Toal said.

Insurance fraud may be reported to the Office of Superintendent of Insurance by calling the Insurance Fraud Hotline at 877.807.4010 or at www.osi.state.nm.us.
