From the Office of House Speaker Javier Martínez:
SANTA FE — Senate Majority Floor Leader Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe) announced that he will not run again for Majority Leader prior to the 2027 Legislative Session and will not seek another term in the Senate in 2028.
Leader Wirth has served in the Senate since 2009 and previously served in the House of Representatives for four years. He was first elected as the Majority Leader by the Senate Democratic Caucus in 2016.
New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque) issued the following statement:
“Leader Wirth is a thoughtful, collaborative, and dedicated public servant, who has always put the needs of New Mexicans first. His decision to open up his leadership role to the next generation during his final term in office reflects his steadfast commitment to doing what’s right for the people of our state.
His leadership, kindness, and humor will be sorely missed throughout the Capitol, but Leader Wirth’s legacy will live on for many decades to come. Whether they realize it or not, New Mexicans’ lives are better today because of the policies and investments he has championed over the past 20 years to protect our land and water, improve fairness in our tax code, safeguard New Mexicans’ human rights, and expand access to educational and economic opportunities statewide.
I look forward to stirring up more good trouble with Leader Wirth in the remainder of his time in the Senate, as we continue our work to build a better New Mexico for this generation and the next.”
