New Mexico Attorney General Recognizes Native American Heritage And A Call To Action For Missing And Murdered Indigenous People; Task Force Convened

Attorney General Hector Balderas

AG News:

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas Friday remembered all missing and murdered American Indian and Alaska Natives on Red Shawl Day.

“Native American women are more than twice as likely to become victims of violent crime or sexually assaulted and in New Mexico have the highest rate of homicide,” Attorney General Balderas said. “Regardless of complex federal and state jurisdictional limitations, we will seek ways to advocate for timely investigations and increased victim support services. This is a black eye for our entire nation.”

AG Balderas will convene a national task force of state AG’s through the Attorney General Alliance.

People were encouraged to wear red Friday to remember and honor missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
