New Mexico Archaeology Fair: Lincoln Historic Site Aug. 4-5

NMDCA News:

The New Mexico Historic Preservation Division (NMHPD) invites the community to Lincoln Historic Site 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 4-5 to see flintknapping in action, throw an atlatl, learn about ground-penetrating radar and much more during the 2023 New Mexico Archaeology Fair.

For more than three decades, the Archaeology Fair has brought organizations across New Mexico to celebrate and share information about public archaeology. The fair takes place at a different New Mexico site each year.

Exhibits at this year’s event include demonstrations of flintknapping – the process of chipping away debris from certain rocks to shape them into sharpened tools – alongside presentations on depictions of animals in rock art, the effects of animals on archaeological sites, and tutorials about using ground-penetrating radar and magnometers in archaeology. Given the 2023 Archaeology Fair’s location in Southern New Mexico, the event will also feature an exhibit on archaeology in the Tularosa Basin.

This event is part of Old Fort Lincoln Days at Lincoln Historic Site and is included with admission. Admission to the historic site is $7 for adults, kids, veterans, and active military members and their families get in free. You can purchase tickets online at nmhistoricsites.org.

The New Mexico Archaeology Fair aims not only to celebrate archaeological work across New Mexico, but to make it more accessible to the public. During a weekend full of history at Lincoln Historic Site, join us for a celebration of the ways that we uncover that history!
