COUNTY News:
Representatives from the Los Alamos County Assessor’s office and the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services advise that the start time has changed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the Saturday, March 16 clinic to assist veterans with property tax exemptions.
Military veterans and unmarried widows of veterans are encouraged to visit the American Legion Post 90, 1325 Trinity Drive, Los Alamos, anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16.
This clinic is designed to assist eligible veterans with on-the-spot filing for either a “Veterans Property Tax Exemption” or a “Veterans Property Tax Waiver” that could significantly reduce the taxable value of primary residences. Proof of veteran status and residence in the state are required.
To expedite the filing process, Veterans must provide a copy of one of the following:
- DD 214 Form.
- National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, NOAA – Form 56-16.
- Public Health Service, PHS Form 1867.
To demonstrate proof of residency, veterans should provide one of the following:
- A valid New Mexico driver’s license.
- Voter registration card.
- Most recent state income tax return.
If filing for a disabled veteran tax waiver, a Veterans Affairs award letter declaring 100 percent permanent and total service-connected disability is required.
