YMCA News:
The Family YMCA is excited to introduce a new inclusive fitness opportunity for the community. Strong Foundations – Adaptive Strength & Balance is a free class designed to support teens and adults of all abilities in building strength, balance, and confidence. The class will begin Tuesday, April 14, in the Main Y Studio.
This adaptive program focuses on developing core strength, posture, balance, and coordination through intentional and repeatable movement patterns. Designed for individuals with special needs and diverse abilities, the class provides individualized modifications and structured guidance to ensure every participant feels supported and successful. Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace while developing physical confidence and body awareness in a safe, welcoming environment.
The class will be taught by Corrin, a former middle school Art Teacher and coach with extensive experience working with Life Skills students.
Corrin’s qualifications include:
- Certifications: NCSF Personal Training, ACE Group Fitness Instructor, and American Red Cross CPR/First Aid
- Specialized Coursework: ACE Adaptive Fitness for Clients with Special Needs, ACE Senior Fitness Specialist, and Tivity Health Silver Sneakers Classic and Balance
- Volunteer Experience: Art Instructor for ARC of the Tri-Cities and Assistant Coach for Special Olympics New Mexico
As part of our commitment to inclusion and community collaboration, The Family YMCA is in the early stages of building a partnership with Special Olympics New Mexico. The Strong Foundations – Adaptive Strength & Balance program is designed to complement existing Special Olympics offerings by focusing on foundational strength, balance, and movement skills that support both athletic performance and everyday wellness.
Through this developing collaboration, The Family YMCA aims to provide an additional, supportive space where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can build confidence, stay active, and continue growing beyond traditional sport settings.
