New Acting MAPR-Los Alamos Site Manager Announced

Mary Scales

MAPR-Los Alamos News:

Mary Scales has accepted a temporary detail as Manhattan Project National Historical Park (MAPR-Los Alamos) Site Manager. She will serve in this position for 120 days ending April 30, 2023.

Scales has a bachelor’s degree in anthropology/archaeology, and a master’s in historic preservation. To this position, she brings five years of federal service and professional knowledge in cultural resource management, project management, and Cold War Era site management.

She previously worked in the cultural landscape group in the Southeast Regional Office of the National Park Service, as a compliance specialist at Grand Teton National Park, lead architectural historian for the Idaho National Laboratory (contractor for Department of Energy), and is the Legacy Intermountain Region’s Cultural Resource Inventory System Program Coordinator in Santa Fe.

“I am honored to have been selected for this position and look forward to working with the knowledgeable staff and volunteers, and developing my own understanding of MAPR as it relates to the community, federal agencies, and park visitors,” she said. “While I have supported a number of on-going projects and efforts at MAPR in my current role, I am excited to work directly with community partners, agencies, and additional stakeholders as we move into the new year!”

When Scales isn’t in the office, she is likely enjoying public lands around Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Valles Caldera – hiking or running in the warmer months and cross-country skiing when snow is on the ground. She enjoys photography and traveling to eat good food in beautiful places.
