NEA News:NEA-New Mexico Announces Election Recommendations for State Treasurer, Attorney General and Secretary of State
National Education Association – New Mexico President Betty Patterson and our elected Education Political Action Committee (EdPAC) announced today our Recommendation to our members of the 2018 re-election campaigns of:
- Maggie Toulouse Oliver for New Mexico Secretary of State;
- Tim Eichenberg for New Mexico Treasurer; and
- Hector Balderas for New Mexico Attorney General.
“Maggie Toulouse Oliver, Tim Eichenberg, and Hector Balderas are Recommended for their 2018 re-election campaigns, based on their record as incumbents demonstrating strong support for New Mexico students and the public education employees who help our students achieve success,” Patterson said.
The Education Political Action Committee (EdPAC) is elected by vote of the general membership from regions in proportion to the NEA-NM membership in the region. NEA-New Mexico members of the EdPAC interview, examine questionnaires, or examine voting records of all candidates for legislative, statewide and federal office, before recommending them to the membership. The NEA-NM Board of Directors makes final recommendations on statewide candidates.
The criteria used to evaluate candidates come from the legislative program and resolutions approved by the NEA-New Mexico Delegate Council. The criteria make sure candidates ‘measure up’ by demonstrating commitment to: strengthening public education; ensuring children’s health and safety; maximizing student learning success; and respecting school employees. NEA-New Mexico’s criteria are nonpartisan.
Patterson said, “We will work to ensure each of these candidates are re-elected and look forward to continuing our partnership with each of them in Santa Fe.”
