PEEC News:

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will host “Nature on Tap,” part of a new informal discussion series, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 at the Blue Window Bistro.

Steve Watts, general manager of the Los Alamos Co+op, will lead a discussion on how a local mountain bicycling association is hoping to stimulate economic development in Los Alamos, all centered around fun on our single-track trails.

The “On Tap” series is a relatively new project from the Los Alamos Creative District and is held every Thursday with the themes “Nature on Tap,” “History on Tap,” “Science on Tap,” and “Art on Tap.” It is a great way to get out in the community and meet people with similar interests. This event is the second “Nature on Tap” discussion, which will be held on every fourth Thursday of the month.

For this installment of “Nature on Tap,” Watts will talk briefly about how the Los Alamos Tuff Riders, an International Mountain Bicycling Association Chapter (501 c 3), has:

  • Merged two different groups of organized mountain bike clubs into a unified organization, intended to give a greater voice to their concerns;
  • Worked with the County to develop a comprehensive multi-use trail plan that includes a bike park, a comprehensive signed trail system, and future/improved connector trails to bring the various trail systems together; and
  • Committed to planning and organizing a weekend of mountain biking activities billed as Los Alamos EnduroFest, Aug. 1-3.

The organization’s hope is that beyond just being able to enjoy the trails themselves, these concerted efforts also will have a positive economic impact on Los Alamos County. After Watts introduces the topic, he will open it up to the group for informal discussion.
