For phase two of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project, Los Alamos High School Senior Natalie Aulwes is leading a free workshop, for girls ages 11-14 years old in Los Alamos and the surrounding area, to explore the basics of engineering concepts and design.
ProjectY cowork Los Alamos at 150 Central Park Square is hosting this special workshop for 20 girls, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.
The workshop Saturday will include learning about hand drafting, computer assisted design, basic circuits, and showcasing how she used these elements to design and build a solar powered helicopter landing zone. Her goal is to inspire more girls to solve real world problems utilizing engineering concepts.
Note: The workshop is limited to 20 girls and reserving a space is required. RSVP must be received by Thursday, Aug. 29 to natalie.aulwes@gmail.com.
Aulwes has been a Girl Scout for 12 years in Troop 116. She grew up skiing on Pajarito Mountain and is enthusiastic about enjoying the great outdoors. She has been a National Ski Patroller for Pajarito Mountain for the last three years and plans to continue her training in college.
Her interest in engineering began as a member of a FLL (First Lego League) Robotics Team, an all-Girl Scout champion team called the Radioactive Fireflies. Mr. Davis, her Robotics and Advanced Engineering teacher at LAHS, has been her inspiration in furthering her curiosity in engineering and Advanced Robotics at UNM-LA.
Aulwes also is a student intern at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Applied Engineering and Technology Division working with a six jointed Universal Robot Arm under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Hashem and Dr. Michelle Espy. Eventually she wants to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering after she graduates from LAHS.
