Museum Of International Folk Art Presents: ‘Kabuki & The Making Of A Vengeful Female Ghost’ June 9 On Zoom

The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) presents “Kabuki and the Making of a Vengeful Female Ghost,” a free online lecture via Zoom with Dr. Satoko Shimazaki, Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Theater at UCLA.

The lecture will take place at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday, June 9.

Dr. Shimazaki’s areas of research include early modern Japanese theater and popular literature. She also covers the history of modern kabuki, gender representation on the kabuki stage, sound and visual media, and the interaction of performance, print, and text. Dr. Shimazaki was a contributor to MOIFA’s publication, “Yokai: Ghosts, Demons, & Monsters of Japan” (Museum of New Mexico Press, 2019).

Her first book, “Edo Kabuki in Transition: From the Worlds of the Samurai to the Vengeful Female Ghost” (Columbia University Press, 2016), was awarded the John Whitney Hall Book Prize.
