During her speech at the No Kings 3.0 Rally Saturday at Ashley Pond Park, State Rep. Christine Chandler commended New Mexicans for being leaders in social justice, saying, ‘New Mexico has the capacity, the values and the vision not only to find our way out of these dark times but to show the rest of the country the way to go.’ Chandler also cheered the state legislature for passing the Immigrant Safety Act. ‘This will get our state and local governments out of the business of contracting with ICE to detain innocent people in deplorable conditions, and it prevents ICE from deputizing local police for immigration enforcement.’ Photo by Kirsten Laskey/ladailypost.com

Lena Weber-Salazar, director of policy for the New Mexico American Civil Liberties Union, spoke during the No Kings 3.0 Rally Saturday at Ashley Pond Park. While New Mexico has made headway in fighting ICE, Weber-Salazar pointed out that more needs to be done. ‘Right here in New Mexico … our detention centers in Torrance, Cibola and Otero counties have documented patterns of abuse and inhumane conditions – solitary confinement, rotten food, sewage in cells, people denied medical care … but New Mexico said this year, not in our name. After a decade of work … Gov. Lujan Grisham signed the Immigrant Safety Act into law. This is what it looks like when a state fights back and refuses to be complicit. Now we work to protect something else, our right to live our lives freely without being watched,’ Weber said, adding that the administration is deploying a massive surveillance system that needs to be stopped.
