MOWW News:This month’s meeting of the Military Order Of The World Wars is Tuesday Jan. 16. The speaker is Nancy Bartlit, a local author, historian, lecturer, publisher and environmentalist. She taught in Sendai, Japan for two years, tutored Japanese in her home town, Los Alamos, and returned to Japan to study technology and industry.
Her talk is entitled “Santa Fe’s Mystery History: The Santa Fe Internment Camp in the shadow of Los Alamos (1942-1946)”.
From 1942 to spring of 1946, the former Civilian Conservation Corps Camp was converted to a facility that houses 2,100 men. A total of 4,555 men of Japanese descent passed through its gates. These included men who averaged 52 years old and were denied citizenship even though they lived in the in the U.S. for almost two decades and American-born citizens of Japanese descent who had lost their citizenship.
The MOWW meeting is in the 2nd floor conference room at the Los Alamos Research Park. The Los Alamos Research building is west of the South Mesa Fire Station. Parking is available east of the fire station (accessible from the southbound lane of the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge) or east of the Research Park building (access is through the LANL control stations to West Jemez Road.)
Entrance to the Research Park main conference room is from the ground level elevator on the east side of the building to the 2nd level.
The meeting will begin with a social period at 6 p.m. followed by a brief business meeting and dinner at 6:25 p.m. The presentation will begin at about 7:15 p.m. The Military Order of the World Wars dinner meetings are open to interested citizens for the dinner and program with RSVP, or the program only at no cost. The Hot Rocks Java Café staff will be catering the dinner: Spiral Cut Ham and appropriate side dishes. Cost of the dinner is $25 per person.

Act of Congress chartered the Military Order of the World Wars in 1919 as a national patriotic organization. The principal objectives of the MOWW are continuing service to the Nation, and patriotic educational opportunity for the nation’s youth and citizens. Current youth programs are focused upon annual Youth Leadership Conferences for high school students presented in New Mexico by its related Sunbelt Patriotic Youth Leadership Conferences, Inc. Current, former and retired federally commissioned officers of all branches of the United States Uniformed Services are eligible for membership in the MOWW and are especially invited to attend our meetings.
