C’YA News:
The Mikey Aslam Scholarship is due this Thursday for LAHS graduating seniors. Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA) oversees the scholarship for the family and applications are being accepted via mail (postmarked by the 27th) or sent by email before midnight.
While many students stress over the letter of support, the C‘YA application simply requests a letter or email from someone that knows them well and can sing their praises. Requirements mostly include some type of community service, volunteer work, church activities, or Scouting.
While you need to have documentation of your academics, they need not be official, a simple photocopy is fine. Students need to have a plan or a goal and explain how the funds (ranging from $500-$1,000) will be used to achieve their goals.
“We hope that LAHS students apply to the Mikey Aslam Scholarship, not only to give them the opportunity to lessen the financial burden of college but to also let them reflect on how their actions in religious life, community service, volunteering or Scouting has helped others,” Tariq Aslam said, Mikey’s father.
The letters from students need to lay out their plans for the future. This coupled with a letter of support from friends, family or school staff that know and love them is a treasure for both the student and the family.
“The Mikey Aslam Scholarship has helped eight LAHS graduates pursue their dreams, which range from the healthcare profession to engineering, fashion, hospitality and tourism,” Kim Aslam said. “It truly warms our hearts to hear how Mikey was inspirational to others.”
One of those quotes from a previous recipient was, “His good mood was contagious, and it was easy to enjoy time with him.” Those memories are keepsakes to the Aslam family when they review the applications each year.
