COUNTY News:

Mesa Public Library and the Adult Learning Center at University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) are collaborating to offer another round of Adult English Language Classes that run now through December of this year.

Beginning classes meet downstairs at Mesa Public Library 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and Intermediate/Advanced classes also meet 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the same location. There is no fee to participate, all learning materials will be provided at no cost to students, and drop-ins are welcome (although registration is encouraged through the library event calendar at LosAlamosLibrary.org).

Youth Services librarian Melissa Mackey said, “The UNM-LA/public library partnership has a  goal of reaching beyond the traditional classroom to teach English language learners in a casual,  comfortable environment.” Coursework will be tailored to meet individual needs; skill assessments will be provided by instructors; and classes may include board games, a book club, and other language practice activities. For more information about English Language Classes, please contact Claudia Ress at cress@unm.edu.

Adult learners may bring children to class, but UNM-LA instructors and library staff are not able to provide supervision. Mesa Public Library allows children 6 years and up to be on their own in library spaces. A concurrent program for children 6 and up is offered 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesdays. During the school year, the youth section of the library also has space with board games and art supplies that is open to all 12:30-5 p.m.. During the summer months, board games and coloring are available to anyone in the library during regular business hours.
