STATE News:
CLOUDCROFT — Known for its friendly mountain town charm and cool temperatures throughout the year, Cloudcroft was declared the “Christmas Capital of New Mexico” in a proclamation Aug. 15 from Cloudcroft Mayor William Denney.
“At Christmastime, we celebrate goodwill, generosity, neighborly spirit and a spirit of rejuvenation,” said Karen Sonnenfelt of Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce. “In Cloudcroft, locals and visitors experience that feeling of peace, joy, relaxation and community year round. It’s a way of life in Cloudcroft, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this distinction as the Christmas Capital of New Mexico by welcoming all to enjoy that ‘holiday’ spirit—no matter what time of year you visit!”
To experience the warmth of the holidays, regardless of season, Cloudcroft offers a variety of locally owned businesses and restaurants. Browse for unique, handmade items at local boutiques and shops, or stop into any of the local restaurants for delicious cuisine crafted with local flavors. At each locale, you’ll get a taste of life as a local, as well as a friendly welcome from staff and patrons alike. For the active traveler, take advantage of Cloudcroft’s boundless outdoor recreation, ranging from disc golf to skiing, hiking, biking, and more.
The lighthearted, celebratory nature of Cloudcroft shines through its annual special events. For fall visitors, bundle up and don your best plaid flannel for Lumberjack Day and Craft Show Saturday, Sept. 16 at Zenith Park. Honoring the rich history of lumberjacks in the area, the event features a full day of family fun and entertainment, an arts and craft show, food trucks, and axe-throwing and chainsaw competitions.
For those planning to visit during the holiday season, Pioneer Village will be transformed into a Vintage Christmas Village in early December, creating an ideal destination to get into the holiday spirit. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a winter wonderland at The Burro Ave. Exchange, which will be decorated to display a scene from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, complete with carolers and period costumes.
In preparation of the holiday season, the Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce encourages local businesses to celebrate with holiday-themed items, as well as specials and promotions.
