Mariel Nanasi Speaks on ‘Securing a Future Without Coal in NM’

Executive Director and President of New Energy Economy Mariel Nanasi will be speaking on the topic “Securing a Future Without Coal in NM” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in the UNM-LA Media Room (Room 203, Bldg.) in the UNM-Los Alamos Student Center.

Her talk is sponsored by the LASE (Los Alamos Sustainable Energy) Network and the Sierra Club.

New Energy Economy’s Native Power Initiative, located in Santa Fe, is bringing community-scale energy efficiency and renewable energy to the Navajo Nation and New Mexico’s Pueblos.

In addition to the immediate benefits of reduced energy costs, expanded energy access and better environmental impacts, the group seeks  increase support for more renewable energy development, and related job creation, in Native American communities.

New Energy Economy leads action against climate change by working to reduce carbon pollution and create jobs in clean energy and energy efficiency for New Mexico’s families and businesses in the following ways:

  • Creating policies that reduce pollution and grow New Mexico’s economy
  • Protecting public health
  • Safeguarding clean air, water and land
  • Promoting responsible and sustainable business growth
  • Deploying community scale energy efficiency and renewable energy projects

Nanasi is a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer. She is licensed to practice in both the state and Federal courts in New Mexico and Illinois and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Legal cases she has won and settled have been featured in the major media, including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Albuquerque Journal, Santa Fe New Mexican, and on many television stations, including a documentary on PBS.

She has been working on policy and community organizing with New Energy Economy for 3.5 years. Nanasi also serves as a board member of the Santa Fe Art Institute.
