From Marco Serna for First Judicial District Attorney Campaign:
SANTA FE — Former First Judicial District Attorney Marco Serna announces his candidacy for the same office.
As a dedicated prosecutor with more than 14 years of experience, Serna has gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and complexities our criminal justice system faces. “The current DA has enacted selective self-serving policies that fail to understand these complexities which has not only eroded the public’s trust in the judicial system, but it has also left families without justice, and has squandered public funds.” –Serna campaign.
Serna stated, “As a candidate for District Attorney, I disagree with the current administration’s selective approach to prosecuting DWI cases. My commitment is to ensure that all DWI cases are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The role of the District Attorney is not just to prosecute crimes but to safeguard the community, uphold justice, and prevent future offenses. The current approach to DWI cases by this administration falls short of these responsibilities, leaving the victims and families of victims of DWIs without justice. It’s time for a District Attorney who understands the importance of prosecuting all DWI cases to protect our roads, our families, and our future.”
Serna continued, “In our pursuit of justice and safety within the First Judicial District, it is essential that we collaborate with our partners in law enforcement rather than play the blame game. The challenges we face in ensuring the security and well-being of our community are complex and multifaceted, requiring a unified approach that leverages the strengths and insights of all stakeholders involved.”
Serna is dedicated to providing the public with transparency in his administration. In the wake of the events surrounding the toppling of the obelisk, and court settlements that cost the public $25,000 for infringements on free speech, fall short of what our community deserves, it has become increasingly clear that there is a profound need for greater transparency within the First Judicial District Attorney’s office.
Serna stated, “As a public servant, I am committed to building a foundation of trust and openness between the justice system and the people it serves.”
Finally, we have to address the mismanagement of public funds—with a limited budget, the District Attorney’s office must manage its resources wisely—The Rust lawsuit is a primary example of wasted resources. The hiring of special prosecutors and public relations firms cannot be justified. We can and will do better under Marco’s leadership.
“Serna is running for the office of District Attorney with a true belief in the power of smart prosecution to protect our community, uphold justice and ensure equality for all Northern New Mexicans.” –Serna campaign.
