MANNM Diabetes Walk/Run At Rover Park Oct. 6

MANNM News:

Medical Associates of Northern New Mexico (MANNM) invites all members of the public to join in its first Diabetes 1 mile/ 3.2 mile Walk/Run.

The event is Oct. 6 at Rover Park in White Rock to raise awareness for Diabetes.

The CDC reports:

  • More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, and one in four don’t know they have it;
  • More than 84 million US adults—over a third—have prediabetes, and 90 percent of them don’t know they have it; and
  • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States (and may be underreported).

The incidence of diabetes is increasing with more people becoming overweight due to convenient,but unhealthy dietary choices. While genetics has a role to play, lifestyle choices help in modifying the course of the disease and the numerous complications caused by uncontrolled diabetes.

“People often need a goal to force them to exercise and sometimes signing up for events provides people the motivation to do it,” said Dr. Garimella, an Endocrinologist at MANNM. “Our goal is for this to be held annually, to get people moving and exercising in the summer in preparation for a fall event. We hope we can have people participate in honor of someone who has lost their life due to diabetes related complications, support someone they know who has diabetes, to improve their own health or simply to support a local volunteer organization, shop local and be outside on a lovely fall morning.”

All funds raised from the event will be disbursed equally to the American Diabetes Association for diabetes camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes and the Los Alamos Auxiliary Fire Brigade http://laafb.wikidot.com/capabilities as part of giving back to the community.

The organization hopes to choose a different local non-profit organization to benefit each year.

As part of the festivities the Los Alamos Co-op, http://losalamos.coop/ will showcase healthy snacks and drinks available at their store to show that healthy eating choices are available locally and easily accessible.
