SANTA FE — Today, Oct. 23, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver announced her candidacy for the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico, pledging to bring her proven leadership, deep experience in public service, and unwavering commitment to protecting democracy to the state’s second-highest executive office.
In announcing, Toulouse Oliver released a video on social media channels highlighting the extraordinary nature of this moment in history for our state and nation, stating, “New Mexico, we are facing a moment unlike any in our history. Donald Trump is attacking our democracy and pushing an extreme agenda. New Mexico needs a fighter who will stand up to him. That’s why I’m running for Lt. Governor.”

Toulouse Oliver has served as Secretary of State since 2016, following nearly a decade as Bernalillo County Clerk. She is nationally recognized for her work defending election integrity, expanding voter access, and leading bipartisan efforts to combat disinformation. Her leadership earned her the presidency of the National Association of Secretaries of State and invitations to testify before Congress on election security and transparency.
Her campaign for Lieutenant Governor will focus on:
- Confronting the cost-of-living crisis with a bold affordability agenda;
- Pushing back against Trump’s federal cuts to education and healthcare; and
- Advancing proven solutions to expand housing and coordinate responses to homelessness, behavioral health, and addiction.
