Super Bowl Sunday (this year Feb. 9) is one of the most dangerous days on New Mexico’s roads, with New Mexico ranked seventh in the United States for the worst impaired driving. According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), alcohol was involved in 45% of all fatal crashes nationally on Super Bowl Sunday in 2022.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is tackling this head-on in New Mexico, driving game-changing efforts to keep roads safe and prevent Super Bowl celebrations from ending in heartbreak.
Impaired Driving Surges on Super Bowl Sunday
With an estimated 325+ million gallons of beer consumed on Super Bowl Sunday coupled with late-night celebrations and post-game commutes, the risks for impaired driving significantly increase.
Nationwide, impaired driving fatalities have risen 33% since 2019, making this year’s efforts more urgent than ever.
A Campaign to Save Lives
To address this crisis, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) is teaming up with Diageo, the NFL, and Uber on the “Take a Minute. Make a Plan” campaign — a lifesaving initiative urging football fans to spend just 60 seconds arranging a safe ride home before they celebrate on game day.
Football fans already spend 690 minutes a week thinking about the game. Taking just one of those minutes to plan a safe ride home could save countless lives.
By making safety planning a seamless part of game-day traditions, this campaign shifts the narrative from reacting to impaired driving tragedies to preventing them altogether.
It’s not just about raising awareness—it’s about setting a new standard for public safety, proving that simple actions can have a monumental impact.
